John P. Sanderson, Q.C., C.Arb., C.Med.
John Sanderson is a conflict resolution and dispute settlement professional working with interested parties across Canada. He is also a lawyer called to the Bar in British Columbia and Ontario. In 1976 he was appointed as Queen's Counsel.
Mr. Sanderson has been engaged in conflict resolution and dispute settlement activities since 1970. He is a principal of Conflict Managers Group, an alliance of senior professionals from different disciplines formed to provide advice on all aspects of conflict management, to parties in both the public and private sector across Canada. He is one of the founders of ADR Chambers, Canada's largest national dispute resolution organization.
He was one of the founding partners of the law firm of Sanderson, Laing and directed the activities of that firm until it merged with a national law firm, where he became a senior partner.
Prior to that time, Mr. Sanderson was a partner in a mid-sized Toronto law firm where he acted as counsel, and as a conflict resolution advisor and participant, in dealing with employment, corporate, construction, and business litigation matters and also was counsel to a large Toronto general service law firm.
Mr. Sanderson has acted in most aspects of labour and employment, corporate, construction, including environmental, and business and public law as counsel, advisor, negotiator and advocate. He has participated in a wide range of business transactions and represented clients in Europe, the United States and the Caribbean. He has accepted referrals of U.S. domestic and international clients from a noted U.S. national law firm. He has acted as Chief Negotiator for Government of Northwest Territories.
As a dispute resolution professional, Mr. Sanderson has acted as mediator, facilitator and arbitrator in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Northwest Territories, in commercial transactions, including insurance claims, securities and corporate contractual disputes, in construction matters and disputes, in environmental disputes, in inter-governmental disputes, in labour and employment matters, in relation to aboriginal claims and claims of harassment, discrimination and violations of human rights.
He has advised a variety of public and private sector parties across Canada in all aspects of conflict resolution and dispute settlement including: designing effective conflict resolution systems; providing training and advice on the operation of such systems; conducting conflict and relationship audits; facilitation; mediation; arbitration; the negotiation of collective agreements; providing advice and opinions on the full range of dispute settlement matters.

Court appointed arbitrator with respect to Hepatitis C Class Action Claims. Chief Administrative Officer and panel member, ADR Chambers (Western Canada); member of Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada panel of arbitrators and mediators; former Senior Adjudicator with the Indian Residential School Abuse Adjudication Program and Ombudsperson for B.C. Hydro.
PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS:
Mr. Sanderson has co-authored a leading textbook on ADR published by Carswell, entitled "Innovative Dispute Resolution: The Alternative". He has co-authored a textbook on arbitration entitled "Labour Arbitrations and All That" and also a book on collective bargaining entitled "The Art of Collective Bargaining", both published by Canada Law Book.
He has authored numerous articles and papers in national publications and other mediums on business and dispute resolution topics. He has also produced educational videotapes on negotiations and human resource issues.
